Well if she has bought you a laptop, why not puch your luck that little bit further and get yourself a wireless router.......?????
You can then plug your laptop and pc into it and transfer it that way?0 -
don't bother with the router as unless it is 802.11n or gigabit it's kinda pointless for just transfering when you could get a ethernet cable for a couple of quid and use that.0

You don't say what Operating System is running on each machine, but assuming it's Windows XP, this comes with a built-in Files and Settings Transfer Tool, which supports several methods of connecting your old and new PC together, including a LapLink Serial cable, or via a LAN port using an Ethernet crossover cable (or two standard Ethernet cables if you have an Ethernet hub).
Look under Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.
When the wizard starts up it includes a pointer in the first page to a Help file which explains the various connection options and how they work.
If you have Vista, there is no doubt a similar tool, but as I've never used Vista (and never will as long as Linux meets my needs) I can't say specifically how to find it.0 -
just to clarify the above mentioned points for you.
Get a crossover cable (Ethernet) a few quid no more, each plug is worth 10p + cable 30p and connect each computer back to back with the lead.0 -
thanks for info
will read properly when little man has gone to sleep

Look for windows easy transfer on the laptop, that should be able to do what you need. A crossover cable between the 2 computers is the simplest way to connect them provided they both have network sockets.0
