Which laptop?

I dont like having finger prints on the screen, so for me touch screens are out.

The 3d printer is a flash forge AD5X. He won’t be designing his own but downloading existing models and printing them.

My sons gaming mainly takes place on his PlayStation so gaming isn’t a huge influence on the decision in hindsight.

I’ve been looking at the HP 15 AMD Ryzen currently on offer in curry’s for £379.

As long as we can stream videos on YouTube, my son can do his school work, have access to the latest windows and use QuickBooks for my business, that is all we require.

My only advice is to avoid a silver keyboard. U've got a pretty reasonable ASUS Vivobook S15-513E (about five years old) which is more than adequate for 3D printing and using most of the 3D CAD programs (I've tried quite a few) but I really hate the keyboard as I cant see the letters unless I'm right on top of it and it gets even worse when they are illuminated.

If you want to do CAD stuff them you really need at least a 15" screen otherwise its a bit like doing keyhole surgery through a letterbox

My daughter has the same computer but its black with black keys and far easier to use.

You don't have to touch the screen you know. Touchscreen laptops still have keyboards and track pads. However, a touchscreen does tend to push the price up so avoiding them could save some money.

Avoid that Vivobook with silver keys! They are a nightmare to see in almost all lighting conditions, backlit or not. My OH has one and it's awful.

Grey/black illuminated keys are great, I don't think I would buy a laptop without an illuminated keyboard.

Other points… a 1TB SSD is not needed, it adds expense. 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD is fine. Don't forget you will need to backup your drive regularly. Many will store data in the cloud but it's always a good idea to back up the whole laptop to an external USB hard disk drive (those old fashioned spinning disk things) at least once a month

If you are mentioning quick books, consider whether you would want a full numeric keypad on the right of the keyboard, or are happy just using the numbers above the letter keys.
