None of this is new, or needs odd use of apps or internet.
About 15 years ago:
"I'm calling about your Halifax account."
"What Halifax account is that?"
Hangs up
I phoned Halifax and asked whether they had called me in the last few minutes. No
About 6 years ago someone with an odd accent called me and wanted to talk about my bank accounts and how I was getting on with the COVID restrictions
I made some excuse to shorten the call
I phoned the bank and asked whether someone might have called me. "Actually we are making calls to customers from local branches." "Can you please put me through to the local branch?" I ended up speaking to the same person who had called me, and I apologised for being suspicious.

Scammers buy databases of "suckers" or other customer lists from hacks on major companies with the hope of getting valid linked customer details and phone numbers.
Make absolutely 0% difference to them if they are calling a landline, VOIP or mobile… more people use mobiles and VOIP so more data breaches will include them and so more scam calls will be made to them. Donkeys years ago there was a benefit to landlines as the caller could prevent the recipient from disconnecting the call but that was changed in 1994, well before the proliferation of mobiles and VOIP.
Mobiles normally have CLI, unlike traditional landlines (or such phones being used on VOIP), so that encourages number spoofing and some people may be more off guard if their phone flashes up that its Barclays or HSBC or whoever their bank is but number spoofing has always been possible and easy to do. Were it not, call centre (for legitimate purposes) couldn't work and especially not multi-brand call centres where the agents supposed number needs to switch depending on if he is calling on behalf of Sky or TrainLine or Dominos

Very transparent scam effort.
No bank will approach a customer via Whats App in respect of an issue which involves sensitive information being requested.

I never answer phone calls. People can leave a message or text me
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?1 -

Or if they say they are from the bank, say you will ring back. as you are busy at the moment & hang up. Any genuine bank staff will be Ok with that. Then ring back on a know or self sourced tel no.
