OP, one more thought. Is it worth cancelling the holiday now, getting a refund, and look at rebooking for the spring. Appreciate it's a surprise for your mum, but it sounds like the stress it is causing you isn't worth it. I think my mum would prefer it if I wasn't stressed.

If 'refund of all monies paid' is still an option, I'd take that and replan from the beginning.

The other providers such as TUI and Jet2 do not have bookable slots for the hotel for the end of Oct for the dates I'm looking at. Mum works in a school so has to be in the school holidays.
I have emailed TC and they are currently looking into the option I suggested of staying 1 extra night and coming home on the Thursday flight. We would then be able to make our way back from Riva to Verona in our own time. I asked if they would be willing to contribute towards a night stay at a hotel nearer the airport (Such as the Best Western) as the Thursday flight is also cheaper than the Wednesday one. Then that Wed afternoon/evening I was thinking we could take a trip into Verona itself for a look around and meal.
