Ceiling fans - any opinions?

Having looked at quotes for Aircon etc, and being unpleasantly surprised, we thought we’d give a ceiling fan a go.

We’ve gone for a DC unit, specific for the very low noise but because we want a specific look, it’s cost a few £s than the one from B&Q.

Has anyone got any opinions about ceiling fans? Hoping just for the air circulation to improve temperatures (though I’m sure they’re not perfect!).

Quite good for cooling and pretty quiet (we had a Westinghouse) but I took ours out for safety reasons because the ceiling height meant it was a bit low.

The only experience I have had of ceiling fans was on a trip to Costa Rica where in most places I stayed had one over the bed (and no air con) They were quiet and did keep me cool.

I imagine the sheer cost to install AC lol.

Ceiling fans are much, much cheaper to install.

One major advantage of DC power = efficiency, as well as low noise tbh. Fwiw, we exclusively have ceiling fans in Pakistan where it's just as humid as the UK but those houses have thick villa type walls, so they do a lot of the heavy lifting but in a heat wave, they're still very good especially if you're sleeping under a ceiling fan

I've got portable AC and it's much better tbh. But obviously costs the Earth in energy consumption

Best thing I ever did was put a ceiling fan in the bedroom. You'll never need it on any more than the lowest setting. Much quieter than a normal fan, almost silent in fact, and hardly any cost to run

I had big 5-blade Westinghouse fans at my last house, they were brilliant. In my new smaller place I've gone for slightly smaller 3-blade Westinghouse fans.

The new ones are not as good as the old ones, slowest speed is a bit too fast, any more than slow and they shake about a lot. I don't know whether the problem is because they are smaller with fewer blades, trying harder to move the same amount of air, or because they are made in China, so not up to Westinghouse's usual standards.

I couldn't be without the ceiling fan in our bedroom, it's a godsend. It's almost silent even on full speed, and whilst I know that a fan will only blow around the existing hot air if it's hot outside, it does still create a breeze that feels cool.

We've had ours on non stop the last few days and really don't think we'd have slept without it.

Fwiw,

I have electric 45mm honeycomb blinds. As they're electric (and smart), and because they're honeycomb thermal (blackout) blinds, it means you can automate it to say "close the blinds 30 minutes before sunrise and open them 30 minutes after sunset"

I've found with the rooms that have those in? Fans are enough. For the rooms that don't? Holy hell it's hot

In the winter, you can sometimes pop them in reverse and it helps with your heating too. That's handy

Only when I travel, and always thought it was genius as someone who gets cold very easily and AC is just not for me. Problem I have is my living room has 3 lights on two switches, where I want the fan, the switch is shared.
