Double glazing quotes

I hope you can all help, and offer me some good advice.

We have had 3 double glazing firms round to offer us quotes.

We currently have secondary glazing and want to upgrade to double!

We need 5 windows and 1 set of balcony doors.

The quotes so far have been £6.5k, £3k and £3.5k (yes you have guessed it £6.5 was a national company trying to play hard ball... and that was with all his sale discounts!).

I am in Farnham, Surrey

I was expecting it to be around £3kish......... but is this the right price??

The firm by BF prefers is the £3.5k on, is it ok to play him off against the other small firm to lower his quote????

Many thanks,

Cuthby.

  • I had 3 average size windows with 2 openings, 3 with 1 opening, plus french doors, with 2 side panels with an opening at top of each.

Quoted £4,800, down to £4,400, to £4,200 if quote "could do a bit of business by certain date!"

Three other local companies quoted at £4100, £3300, and £2800. Went for £3300, haggled to £3000, as told them they weren't cheapest. Watch out for lengths of guarantees, who makes glass etc as all varies - I've a 10 year guarantee - had a couple of problems after installation and they sorted asap.

  • We recently got three double glazing quotes using a site called www.windowpricebeater.com, a useful site. There was a big difference in the prices quoted one national company was quoting 400% more than the smallest company. There was a useful page on the above site called 'Win/Door buyers tips' www.windowpricebeater.com/wintips.htm .

It pays to know exactly what you want, so do your reseach in terms of the different profiles (plastic) that the companies use and the security locking mechanism. ASwell as ensuring (asking to see) that the companies have Health and Safety policy and Liability Insurance, not to mention contacting previous customers, and getting a detailed work schedule before the work starts!

Be aware the large companies do insist on a sale on the night, we told the sales guy frankly that this out of the question! We needed time consider things.

In the end we went with the national company because of the 10 year guarantee and a substantial reduction in price (now 200% more than the lowest price). And we are over the moon, we did not base the decision on price alone but what we needed for our home.
