When we used the Circumvesuviana a few years ago we just bought tickets at the platform. We stayed the next station up from Sorrento, and used it nearly every day. It was all pretty straight forward. We were advised by our host to buy tickets so we could have cards secured well before we got on the trains - they were having big problems with pickpockets. We're planning a return to Pompeii as it has expanded since we visited.
