Is it worth keeping my own car and a company car?

Options
I have a company car which I need to use for my job as a sales person but I also wish to keep my own car for private mileage. What's the best thing to do?

I'm in the same position..........what restrictions do your company have on the use of their vehicle?

For example, if I want to scoot across to Calais on a booze run, I just fire up the private car and away I go. My company won't allow me to do that in their vehicle unless I have first obtained written permission from the Transport Manager........and if he thinks I'm going to stress the back axle by loading it up with cheap vodka then he'll refuse.

Your own car = total freedom to do what you want when you want.

Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.
  • Just depends on many times you use the car, if transport is easily accessible. If you only use the car at the weekends i would probably hire one as its far cheaper that owning one, considering on what you have to pay on a car that you own (tax, insurance, petrol, mot, repairs). I just got rid of my car last year as i was only using it at weekends, and wasn't carrying that much luggage. If i really need a car i will just hire one out. I live very close to public transport and the car hire place, but you might be in a different situation. I take the train to my work, and cycle with panniers on the back of the bike for shopping. I am glad i made the change, i am probably saving myself £2 grand a year .

If you get plenty of mileage for private use, what about running some sort of classic car as a back up vehicle? Cheap classic car insurance. Simple mechanics to fix yourself.
