Cool sheet to wrap in bed

OK so I get hot easily in bed and feel like a thick cotton sheet of some sort may work best for me. Wrapped around like a sleeping bag.

I think it's probably getting too warm for a duvet.

Can I just buy a flat sheet for this purpose?

And are there nice thick cotton ones available?

Finally are the cooling materials such as lycocell any good?

Sounds like you mean a top sheet. Yes, you can just buy a top sheet. We use a duvet cover without a duvet in it when it's really hot, or nothing at all. Saves us buying a top sheet. Sorry, don't know about lycocell, but seems unlikely. Probably better to cool the air, or at least keep it moving in the room using a fan.

Cotton is 'breathable' as they used to say.

    I use a top sheet.

When living in Australia I was told you should always have a top sheet because you don't know what the night temperature will be. But thin is ok.

I do remember something about putting it in the fridge but it would get damp. Must be a way around that.

You could always put it outside until bed time. Do you open the windows to cool the bedroom? I do that on the windy side in the evening to cool the bedroom

Linen is the best for keeping you cool and wicking any sweat, not everyone likes the feel of it but it does soften after several washes.

Bamboo lyocell or viscose is probably second best and has a silky touch but is definitely second to linen

Lyocell, tencel, percal weave long staple cotton are all about equal

Avoid flannel, very high thread counts, satin, polyester, brushed etc which all trap heat and are poor at wicking

Take the duvet out of it's cover and sleep in just the cover. Been doing that for years and it saves buying anything new, very MSE 😉

I never use a duvet as I find them too hot (even the summer ones in winter) so have used sheets and blankets for years. I only ever had cotton/polyester sheets but as they were many years old I started to replace them last year and switched to linen. All I can say is that I wish I had switched years before as I find them the most comfortable bedding I have ever had. They are expensive but they wash beautifully and dry quickly. At the moment I have a linen fitted bottom sheet. a flat top sheet and a linen throw - over winter I added 2 wool blankets and slept really well.

This time of year we swap the duvet for a 1.5 tog or just a cotton sheet in too if the duvet. That works well

This sounds counter-intuitive but I've found the very best thing on a stifling night is a single layer of wool blanket. It has to be 100% real wool. I had this tip from someone on this forum who knows a lot about textiles but there's a lot of information on the Internet if you search 'Why does wool keep you cool?'.

I have a Witney blanket over the foot of the bed and use just that when it's too hot at night - the next day I'm the one who slept despite the heat.

Of course, wool has a reputation for being itchy, due in part to the way the fibres are cut on modern machines, but I haven't found this is a problem if it's just draped over me. There's little friction as there would be with, say, a jumper that gets pulled close to the body.

If you want something like a sleeping bag get inside a duvet cover. However as above a wool duvet which can look quite thin are amazing at keeping you warm in winter, but not overly hot in summer.
