Not sure recommending a 1.2 turbo engine with known problems is a way of avoiding a money pit.

Of course he has as that is something I instill into everyone I know. ie before seriously considering buying any car, check out the the insurance, the road tax, typical reapir costs for the wear and tear items, wet belt intervals, timing chain intervals, auto box servings, serving costs, cost of mid-range typres, reliability, etc., etc., but you p off to view a car. Thankfully, my nephew's answer was 'yes' and I put that down to my bro who almost does what I did bringing up our kids, ie., educating them about affordability

Well, the BMW suggested by the OP shares the same Stellantis engine?
But, that was just one example. Other brands are available:0 -
For £8-12k he could get a Leaf with a 40 or 64Kwh battery, cheaper to insure, nicer to drive, comparatively almost free per mile if he can charge at home, much less to go wrong mechanically.

If we're suggesting alternatives, there are lots of options for that sot of money. He could get a 64kWh Kia Soul or an e-Niro.
But I get the feeling the OP's son's heart is set on something Teutonic. There's probably German EVs in that price range too.

£15K will get many EV's with a good range.

Thanks all but he is only interest in ice cars, no ev's

What's he actually looking for? 10 year old premium cars are going to be real money pits, especially if autos. You can get a new Dacia Sandero for that with 7 years warranty.
What's his criteria? "Cool" and cheap?
I miss when first cars were absolute bangers. The value of mine was dependent on how much petrol was in it at the time.2 -
No it doesn't.

The "criteria" is as stated in my OP.
