Solar Panels and Insurance Backed Scheme (HIES)
Hi, we had a full Solar installation with battery back up installed around 5 years ago, and unfortunately an issue developed just at the same time as our installer 'The Energy Box' and the manufacturer 'GivEnergy' both went into administration. We contacted our insurance provider through the HIES cover scheme and to be fair they have been good in arranging a company to come out and survey the installation, prepare a report as to what need changing etc. The issue is that they are saying that the 'new elements' of the installation will no longer be covered by the HIES insurance scheme cover, but only by a two year warranty provided by the new installer undertaking the remedial works. Our question is how can this be correct as in reality we could have a further issue occur in say 3 years time and we will have no cover, yet under the original HIES we would have been covered until 2034. Is this correct from HIES or do we have a case to insist that the existing HIES cover should apply to all the new replacement works as well as the remaining original installation works right up until the expiry date of the original HIES cover certificate?

It sounds reasonable. As this is an insurance scheme, you can usually only claim once for an item.

Is it correct? What do the terms of the HIES insurance say? That's the only place you'll get a definitive answer.
