Garden fence replacement price

We recently moved to a new place in Putney, southwest London, and are planning to replace our garden fence as it’s very old and unlikely to survive another winter. We’ve started getting quotes, but the prices vary quite a bit. For 25 panels (6ft x 5ft), including removal and disposal of the old panels, we’ve been quoted between £5,000 and £8,000.We haven’t replaced a fence before, so I’m not sure what a reasonable price looks like. I’d really appreciate any advice on what we should expect to pay and if anyone has recommendations for someone reliable who could do this job.

Is this for panels only or posts and toppers?

What is the quality of the panels?

There are so many things that can vary.

You might get more responses on the DIY forum "is this quote fair?", needs a mod to move or you can repost it there, fence panels are expensive, we own 75 percent of our fence panels due to a historic land swap so have had to replace them all at various stages.....

Last time I had a fence done, it worked out at £100 per panel (concrete posts & gravel boards). Accounting for inflation and the London surcharge, anything under £400 per panel would be good value. Just don't accept wooden posts with or without steel spikes - You'll only have to replace them again in 10 years or so. Concrete posts will outlast you by a long way.

I was going to say the same. This was perhaps 15 years ago though, so £2-300 a panel might be reasonable now.

And I'll second the recommendation of concrete posts & gravel boards. Ive not had to replace a post yet. There are disused WWII airfield fences where the chainlink fence has long since rusted away but the concrete posts are still standing after 80+ years.

I had part of a fence replaced, about 4 panels in February, the quote says

"To supply and install 12m of pressure treated close board fencing at a finished height of 1.8m using UC4 certified timber posts set in concrete with square rails and finished with capping, remove old fencing and waste and leave area tidy."

Cost £1152, they did a wonderful job.

The other quote was 1600 for the same. 🤔

Do you actually own the fence or are responsible for it?

It maybe a neighbours fence but it could tell you on the deeds who is responsible.

The other issue with a wooden fence is maintenance and painting/ wood preserver as both sides will need doing to make the fence last longer as your side could be ok but the neighbours side could be deteriorated.

Concrete posts and gravel boards are more expensive than using wooden posts. Not everyone likes their appearance but as already said they are very long lasting.

You can different types and quality of panels. The cheap ones tend to only last a few years even if you paint them.

We had 18 panels with concrete posts and gravel boards fitted for £160 each. South East England but about 5 years ago, so I guess with the significantly increased cost of materials and labour since then, I would guess something more around £220 nowadays.

totally depends on the provider and if you get a guarantee. I've had jacksons in my garden for 8 years now and it's all wood posts without the steel spikes… but it has a 25 year guarantee and you don;t have to paint it ever. you could use their caluclator to work out the cost?

I live in the Thames Valley and in 2022 I paid about £1,500 for 6 overlap panels with concrete posts and gravel boards; £250 per unit.
