Multi-car & multi-driver young person insurance - such a thing?

Hi all, my two teenage(ish) boys are now both not such much teenagers as young adults (17 & 20) and I want but a car for them to share. When I say share, the older one is away at Uni most of the time & so will not likely use the car too much. The other goes to local college for now, by bus.

What is the best way to insure both to drive a small car e.g. Ford Fiesta 1.4L? One has his provisional, the other has applied & both have done young driver closed circuit training, but will still have driving lessons accordingly. We have one main car in the family, insured with Lloyds, but their website says they do not insure new drivers under 21?? So guess that rules out multi-car/multi-driver with them.

Any suggestions/guidance/pointers gratefully received!!

If neither have passed their test, then you'll need learner insurance - almost certainly as a separate policy.

So are only the kids going to drive it? If so you could get a regular policy with one as the main driver and the other as a named driver.

It may be cheaper to get them individual policies but if they are the top up type then you would need to insure the vehicle with yourself as well as the top up type only covers them whilst they are driving and not at any other time.

Thanks for the replies. Neither has passed their test yet but are/will be having lessons very shortly to kick start that process.

I will also need to drive the car from time to time so would need to be on the policy as a named or secondary driver or similar. Have heard that if one of them goes down as the primary driver & me as second, that can lower costs. The question would then be, what about the other son? Would that need to be a separate policy altogether or could he also be included as a primary driver e.g. two primary drivers (both being my sons)?

Which son (once they've passed) will drive the car most of the time? They should be the primary driver.

no, they can be another named driver on the same policy if you are buying a normal policy.

Just be aware that learner drivers are relatively cheap to insure, its when they first pass their test when it goes very high.

Thanks again folks. There will be one son who will likely be the main driver, with the other using the car when they are back from Uni. As far as my use is concerned, that would simply be a supermarket run occasionally to keep it running.

Have heard from neighbours with learner driver kids that the insurance jumps up massively once they have passed the test etc.

Insurers are mainly concerned about fronting, where you declare yourself the main driver and both the kids as named drivers to get lower premiums when the reality is very different. If you drive it at all or never they won't care too much if you are only a named driver.
