You do not need a wireless printer unless you want to print from your laptop when the desktop is switched off.
It is very easy to do - right click the printer, properties, sharing.0 -

Are you on the same workgroup?
When you set up each for the network you both need to be on the same workgroup - eg "LOTTYGROUP" - this usually defaults to MSHOME - not too sure how this is done in Vista though (Quite why they named it after an instant meal I'll never know)0 -

how do i change the workgroup please?0 -
be far easier and cheaper to get a new router that will act as a print server than to buy a wireless printer.0

To check that you are in the same workgroup
right Click "My Computer" then go to "Properties" and then click "Computer Name"
I think by default they will both be in a workgroup called "workgroup"0 -
