A Group travelling with individual Insurance covers.

Morning all, I hope some one can help with this query please?

We (Gran and Grandad) have annual travel cover. We're taking our 'kids' and grandkids on holiday and paying for the lot (£25 - £30k). Will their individual (two families) travel insurances cover us if the booking (Flights, Villa,, Mini-Bus, Park tickets) cover if everything goes Tits up in some way? If not, how can I fix it for them?

Thanks in anticipation !

Travel insurance is typically written on a traveller basis, ie it doesnt matter who paid for it each person going would have to claim for their own losses be that on a single group policy or separate individual policies. Similarly the sums insured is also a per person value so if 8 of you are going and its £32k spend then each person needs £4k cover.

Its no different if you gave one of your kids a very expensive watch for a present, they are the ones that need to insurer it even though they didnt pay for it and they are the ones that suffer the loss if its stolen etc.

The one problem with each unit having their own insurance is that there can be differences in cover/limits between the policies and as such different policies may respond differently to the same circumstances. This may or may not be a problem depending on what the plan would be if, for example, one of the grandkids fell gravely ill before the trip commenced… for their parents, siblings and potentially you then you may be covered to cancel the trip as you are close relatives by most definitions but your other kids and their own kids may or may not be covered to cancel as nephews/nieces/ cousins typically arent covered. It would be much more complex if the illness was related to an existing condition for anyone on a different policy to the ill person.

Buying a Group policy fixes some of the problems, though also means all the eggs are in the same basket, but then you are reliant on all your kids being able/willing to tell you all their medical conditions in the last 3-5 years; would your kids be willing to tell you they had gonorrhea last year?
