Insurance company - Campervan/day van/Motorhome Insurance withdraw +re-register
I have been insured with the same insurer since 2017 and now they are threatening to withdraw my vehicle insurance. It is a 20 year old Devon Campervan and the V5 shows it and always has shown it as a van, now my insurer states that they will withdraw my insurance in 45 days! (I have been in disagreement and correspondance with them since Febraury!!) My insurer requires me to re-register my van, even though the DVLA state the registration catagory does not affect the vehicle insurance, my insurer how states that they DO NOT insure vans. I wonder just how many others are being affected by this insurance problem, my questioning of the insurers would suggest a pretty large number.

So, I assume your van has a vehicle class "N" and should be "M"?

They want the body type changed to "Motor Caravan"?
That can be all sorts of fun.

If it doesn't conform to those requirements, DVLA won't do it - awning and roof height are the usual sticking points, but they can also be very pernickerty about the graphics.Ultimately, it's entirely up to the insurer as to what they do or don't want to cover, and they can make their own requirements up. If they only want to offer camper insurance to vehicles with "Motor Caravan" body type, that's their prerogative.
Obviously, providing photos will show them it's not a commercial van, but…
There are lots of other insurers out there…0 -
I had a similar problem years ago. I was on the phone with Esure for ages because the model the "computer" said my Astravan was didn't agree with reality. After what seemed like hours arguing back and forth they eventually realised that I was talking about a van not an estate car, I'd been calling it an Astravan throughout, and they don't insure vans. Luckily this was all before the insurance started.

A decent insurance broker should be able to help.

I'd cancel and look for insurance with comfort, caravanguard, RIPE or NFU. I believe all will be able to insure a motorhome that says 'van' on the V5.

Not sure about all of them but I know some have stipulations on what you need fitted to be classed as a motorhome
that may include running water a bed and a cooker or gas supply.
Shop around and see if they have a list of requirements. Mate converted a van some years back and he had to
do all the work within 90 days with safety certificates otherwise they would cancel the policy.
Seem to remember getting a habitation service was a cheaper option to get the certificates than paying for
them individually, if you don't work on it yourself then get a full service but make sure they supply the correct
certificates for your insurance.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Are you insured with LV as they have stopped doing Motorhomes etc.
Also contact Devon in Ferryhill, Co Durham, where their factory is for some advice?
I would try Comfort as really helpful on the phone. You could try Adrian Flux but opinions are variable on them.
Also post a question on MotorhomeFun - lots of experience on there
