One off Caribbean Cruise

We mostly holiday in Europe and have annual travel insurance including cruise cover, this is due for renewal later this month.

We are going on a Caribbean cruise in February next year but this will be our only holiday outside Europe, is it better to upgrade our annual cover to worldwide for the year or to take out stand alone cover for the caribbean cruise?

    I'd say it depends.

Do you have any medical conditions? That might make any whole world policy, single or annual, quite expensive. That said I've found that generally annual cover isn't that much more expensive than single trip.

The thing you shouldn't do is to have 2 policies as the annual one that is Europe only won't cover you for the Caribbean but a single trip one for the Caribbean would only pay out half as it would expect the other policy to take half the responsibility. At least that's how I understand it. You'd need to check T&Cs.

So thing to do is to price up single trip insurance for any Euro trips and then the Caribbean as well vs annual for whole world.

That sounds illogical - although I wouldn't know better one way or the other.

Is the Europe only cover relevant if any claim is made for an issue outwith such territorial areas ?

Certainly need to check the Ts&Cs - better still speak with the potential worldwide cover provider.

I would start by asking your current provider how much it would cost to extend cover to include your Caribbean cruise.

They could check if there is coverage but then when its confirmed there isnt then the single trip insurer would pay out as if the annual policy didnt exist so the worst case scenario is a delay.

It's not even as simple as 50/50 even if there are two policies as it will depend on limits, claim value, what each policies co-insurance terms are etc.

Simply get two quotes and check which works out better for you.

There are multiple types of cruise cover so make sure you know what cover you have and want… basic just includes cruises as if it were a hotel or excursion etc, the full fat covers things like being confined to cabin if you have a gastro incident etc

what about taking out insurance with the cruise company? not sure how well that prices out but I believe it's just a set price per person. never done this myself as we always had insurance in place before booking a cruise.
