Yes it's fair. Most people got back to work when their kids are school aged at the latest unless there is a good reason that they can't such as a disabled child or being a carer for someone else. You have not been unlucky, I think maybe the only unlucky part is that you are sadly now job searching in the worst possible job market for decades. That's not to say you won't find something but it may take a while. In our area it is all domicillary care work. the good thing about that is that they will generally offer training . There may be organizations locally that can help people who have been out of work long term.

Most local Council Authorities have a team that helps local citizens move closer to employment or to find employment. And this help does not require people to be in receipt of benefits

So visit your local Councils website and look for support in finding employment.

The problem with UC and capital is that it punishes people like the OP who save for an occasion, whether retirement or a home deposit or something else. Whilst the rules are written that way, this was deliberate so that UC payments can be lowered to the population, in the same way the cruel system still works now.

How are people meant to save for an occasion, possibly having worked all their life, if when they need welfare support they're told to "use your savings".

That is debating Government policy, not discussing help the OP is asking about, so not really in line with forum rules.

UC is means tested and there has to be a line to draw. The money is not free to pay. It comes from about 30 million people working and paying tax.
