Economy7

I’ve got an Economy7 meter which has stopped switching to night mode. What’s more night use is only 17%, so not worth it. Current supplier Outfox arranged for a smart meter to be installed but SMS engineer aborted installation due to restricted access. Question: is there a supplier who will offer a whole day single electricity tariff by just combining the day and night readings?

    Welcome to the forum!

Question: is there a supplier who will offer a whole day single electricity tariff by just combining the day and night readings?

I'm pretty sure that Outfox used to offer this!

If they've stopped, you should be able to get a single-rate quote from any of the major suppliers but you might need to phone them rather than try to do it over the internet.

You'll probably need to get a meter replacement though. There are some options for restricted spaces although we do see the occasional one where there's nothing to do but move the meter. Can you share a photo of your meter box / cupboard / board?

Do you own your home or are you a renter? How is it heated?

In 2023 I had a smart meter fitted, but not before I had to pay an electrician to move another meter to make room for a smart meter. That was necessary because of the comms hub that sits on top of the regular meter to make it "smart". Two years later my smart meter went dumb and the fix was to relocate the comms hub, which is now attached to my meter by a flying lead. If that option had been available in 2023 then there would have been room for my smart meter without having to move another one.

Many if not most suppliers will bill at single rate if you ask them. You can get single rate price comparisons at theenergyshop.com

It will recognise that you have an E7 meter but there's a button to get single rate quotations.

The single rate variable itself - is normally pretty much the cap - but their can be big differences for TOU or fixes between suppliers.

Octopus iirc used to discount it slightly - but it was like only around £10 pa per fuel iirc.

17% on E7 would suggest you've been paying a premium over SR for a while though.

A lot of people were caught out like that - there were several threads when prices really climbed - not having changed say when changed heating over - some using even about half that overnight.

Beware even if they bill you SR on the existing meter - you might need them to change your meter profile class - so you dont revert to E7 on a replacement.

Its up to a homeowner to find space for a meter - and that can be an expense for you if owner or your landlord if renting.

As an example of the off meter "comms hub" see one users example - where space for bottom cable entry and top comms hub potentially lacking - from user @chubsta here
