My garden is ENE and in the East Midlands We had 7 hours sunshine today, The shade creeps up back garden and the sun is gone about 6pm. TBH this time of year its a blessing when we have back garden in shade. There is enough sunshine for my tropical tortoises if that helps. They tend to move up the garden and finish basking then go to sleep. In the morning The sun comes up at the end of the garden then in afternoon the house causes shade as it sinks down the front/side of the house. I always know what time of day it is as house acts as sun dial. I have massive palm trees at the bottom with seating at bottom of garden. My washing always get dry and I do not have drying machine just back garden washing line. The lounge/front room gets the heat in the afternoons and perfect for nodding off in.

That is a good point regarding the layout of the house as well.

Our last house had the garden (north east facing) on the side of the house. The front of the house was almost south facing and every room except the downstairs loo and the box bedroom which were on the back of the house had a south facing window. In the summer the rooms could get unbearably hot.

Our "new" house has a north west facing garden and the two rooms on the front of the house are almost south facing so they do get warmer but the kitchen, dining, family room stretches across the back of the house and is out of the sun and has a tiled floor which as we found out last week stays much cooler plus if it gets too hot at the front of the house we have a decent sized spare bedroom on the back of the house to escape too. Although we did manage to keep the main bedroom reasonably cool last week with lots of windows open.

Yes, seeing the sun set over the Solway with Criffel in the background takes some beating.

Mind you, we have the Ullswater fells in direct view from our west facing front garden (along with a bit of Blencathra when the trees are bare) so we're not doing too badly!
