Security deposits on holiday accommodation
Hi Martin
I was watching your holiday special show last week and thought of a question that hopefully you can help with.
I am planning road trip in Canada next year with hotel stops in 7 different destinations.
Each place advise that they will require a credit card to take a security deposit of between 250 - 500 Canadian dollars.
This means that potentially I need to have 3500 dollars available on my credit card over and above my spending money.
My credit limit on my card is not that high so causes a problem.
Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks
Stewart

Get another card?
Use the card of someone travelling with you for some/all of the deposits?
Both?

Ask for the credit limit on your card to be raised?

Presumably the venues will take the security deposit on check in and refund on check out so you only need to have suffiicient for two venues in your card limit.

Not usually how it works, those deposits often sit at "pending" (and consuming credit headroom) for up to a month.

Being nosy….where are you planning to go in Canada?

Another card could work - obviously as long as you can get a credit equivalent to cover 3500 Canadian.
£2000 would cover that.
Is that a realistic option ?

Don't forget to let your card company know you are going to Canada, that many transactions might cause some issues unless they know you are there.

I don't know if would be practical to have a cash security deposit, and that returned on departure. Clearly that would depend on getting the property checked before you actually depart each time.

Which is unfeasable in the main as you have to then wait for someone to go in and check, which could delay your departure by a while.
