Live in carers

Does anyone have experience of this type of service?

MIL has Alzheimer's and we're looking at what options are available. Social services have assessed her needs and she can go into a care home but that leaves FIL at home, with his own needs. I'm wondering if it's possible for her to stay at home but with a live in carer?

That would be my number one option if I ever need care, the issue is the funding. I doubt whether any cash strapped LA would fund it, so the question is do they have the liquid assets to self fund this for several years?

Not sure if you're asking if the Council will pay for live-in carers or you're looking to fund yourself?

No shortage of private companies that will provide that type of service, we were paying on £1300 a week for Mum (South Bucks) as she was self-funding but lots of caveats about what that actually included.

If you're looking for the Council to fund, then you it comes down to a lot of different factors, best thing is to speak your Mums' social worker about the options available, get the Council to do a Financial Assessment to see if they'll pay anything and make sure you're claiming all the benefits that she is entitled to.

It will likely get to the point that 24/7 care is needed, something to bear in mind.

If the local authority are paying they will not fund a 24 hour carer. Four calls a day, 5 at an absolute stretch is the maximum that you will get.

I have a friend who provides to live -in care. Sometimes it’s one or two weeks one or two weeks off sometimes people do part of the week each. They are entitled to 2 hours a time off and you also need to think about cover for holidays and illness which may agency cover and which is more expensive.

My grandmother was self funding and although she didn’t need 24 hour care, she did need two carers at a time because of her mobility issues and that in itself became un affordable. It is an expensive option.

Thanks for all the replies. Fully self funding wouldn't be an option I don't think as FIL has 2 visits a day from carers and that's costing them £750 a month.

Could reach out to social services and see what they might be able to do, seeing as they've agreed to pay £890 a week for a care home but her dementia has advanced quite a bit since she's been in hospital for a month for a fractured hip. She doesn't sleep at nights now, preferring cat naps throughout the day

As said in previous posts, although care homes are expensive, they are usually cheaper than multiple daily carer visits/live in carer. So if the council are paying they will probably only pay for a care home and no more.

If you think she could manage with just a couple of visits a day, they might be prepared to listen at least. However it sounds like the situation is unlikely to improve, so probably a care home might become the only option sooner rather than later anyway.

In my area, the Council will fund 4 visits a day.

After that, a residential care home is offered.

I guess it depends what a 'visit' entails.

One person for 15 minutes, or two people for an hour, or something inbetween.
