Brita Water Filters - How long do they truely last?

Hello all,
Here is a question which I am hoping someone can advise me (and the rest of the world) on.
Brita water filters are meant to last for four weeks and they generally put a simple timer on top which counts down the four weeks and flashes when it is time to change the filter.
I guess that this four week interval is a generalisation to cover the water quality at most locations and is short enough to ensure the filter will performs satisfactorily.
I would prefer to have a simple indicator or perform a simple test which would indicate that the filter is not performing well and it is time to change it. Thus, the life could be extended either because the filter is not having so much water passed through it and/or the water quality of the source water. Equally, if the filter was ineffective after a shorter time, that also could tested for.
If someone understands the workings of these filters well and can help with this, that would be great.
This is one for those who paid attention during O Level chemistry......
Many thanks, Neil Good.

I change mine generally every 8 weeks ,it all depends how much water you filter:D0

I change mine every 8 weeks as well. In this weather though I expect we will not go more than 6 weeks and maybe even stick to the four as we are using far more water.
The water filters more slowly when it needs changing and normally you can notice a deteroriation in the filtration.0 -
When we've used one, we always bought the Boots own ones, on 3for2 offers.
Then saw some in Lidl - not tried yet, but MUCH cheaper, £1.99 ish, I think.
Anyone had experience?
