@keanefan Don't choose Pay On Receipt of Bill: it'll cost about 7% more than Monthly Variable Direct Debit.

It certainly does. Around Oct last year they wanted to up mine from £150 to £187 (despite £600 credit.) I just reset DD down to £125 (Current credit balance £300) I knew I had more than enough to cover winter costs.
If I go into my account now & change payments, it is showing £186 as recommended amount. Yet last month my DD more than covered usage.
I think their system can not handle some tariffs ( I'm om IOG) So it is working on full peak rate usage & not picking up that my average kWh cost is around 15p & not 28p
One thing Octopus system does not throw a wobbler when you set the DD a lot lower than they say.

Thank you. I read somewhere that it costs the same. I won't do that then.

This may be it. I am on the Flux tariff and they cannot give a prediction of how many kwh I will use in a year so that is probably why they don't have a decent estimate of how much my usage is.

I always thought that was the reason, I used to be on Agile, but since last spring I've been on a normal fixed tariff and their prediction is still way off and often nonsensical

Payment of receipt of bill can cost more (I don't know if they even allow it on smart tariffs), but Monthly variable Direct Debit costs the same because it's still a direct debit and they're not incurring any extra costs. You also have the option of paying it in full as soon as they tell you what your balance is each month instead of waiting the two weeks for them to take the DD, if you prefer.
If you do want to set it up I think you have to phone or e-mail them.

Yes, MVDD is unpublicised and you can't set it up online.
You have to email or phone Octopus, but they'll happily sort it out immediately.
