It’s not uncommon for a gully to block with a combination of leaf debris, fat, etc. Maybe it’s as simple as that, although only 18months between blockages suggests it wasn’t maybe cleared fully the first time.

Thanks - it's only 13-14 months since it was unblocked, but nothing in the previous 15 years!

You need to invest in a decent pair of long rubber gloves.

If the wee grate lifts off, you can stick yer marigolded hand in there every year and scoop out the collected debris - that should sort it.
A long handled soup ladle also works well. But if you want to live a long, prosperous life, don't put it back in the kitchen draw.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –
