We've got a 2mb connection and we play online quite a lot. We have the xbox 360 and the ps3 and both are great. It depends on the type of games you like which one may suit you best. There are some excellent games for each. The xbox costs for online play (as mentioned on previous posts) and the ps3 is free. The ps3 is also better (in my opinion) for the downloadable arcade type games. You can get them for about £4/£5 for really good games. Also, the ps3 60gb is backward compatable so if you already have a ps2 then some games would play on the ps3. It also has a memory card reader if you have a sony memory card. And it's a blu-ray player too :)

I wouldn't reccommend a wii. I had one and it was a novelty for a few weeks then I never touched it for about 2 months and sold it. It's just a novelty.

This is one of the weirdest arguments I hear in favour of the PS3...I have a PS2 and manage to play the games just fine having bought a 360 - I play them in the PS2 still...

Well I'm a serious gamer and the only console I have is a Wii. Mind you I do have a PC for 'serious' games. For sheer fun the Wii is hard to beat but it is in a different market to the Xbox 360 and PS3 in my opinion. If you'd have asked the question last year I would have said Xbox 360 but since the PS3 price cuts and now that more games are becoming available I think I'd go for a PS3.

I stumbled on this flowchart the other day which may help you decide.

    I'm a convert from PS2 to Xbox360.

    It's great.

I'm sure the PS3 is great too.

    PS3 will play Blue-Ray (i.e VHS)
    360 will play HD-DVD (i.e. Betamax)

Motorsport games on 360 just as good as PS3 (see Forza and Dirt)

    Graphically 360 is marginally better.

360 games likely to become cheaper whereas PS3 games more likely to stay the same.

360 has a 'paid for' on-line game service which means more support and more frequent updates?

    Personal choice really.

But 360 is very good (so is PS3?!?!?!!!)

    I'm a games reviewer and have played on the 360, Wii and PS3. I own a 360.

Yes you have to pay for Live, but, it is easily the best online service available. It is having some issues at the moment, but, they should be fixed shortly, and aren't currently serious enough to stop you playing online.

The PS3 version of Live is quite frankly shocking. Yes it's free, but you get what you pay for.

Games wise, the PS3 has a big disadvantage in that developers have had a year longer working with the 360, and, currently, there isn't really anything that stands out for it.

Depending on what type of gamer you are, I would honestly suggest the Wii or 360.

The Wii is great fun, some of the best gaming fun I have had is on that console. But, it's more for "fun" and family gaming. If you want something a little harder, or hardcore, then the 360 would be my suggestion.

The one big disadvantage the 360 has, is the HDDVD player. The PS3 comes with Blu-Ray, and it appears that this format will win the HD war. Microsoft have said that they are open to a Blu-Ray attachment, but my honest feeling is that the PS department of Sony, will do everything they possibly can to stop this happening (Blu-Ray was launched by Sony if you didn't know) as it will give them a huge advantage in the console war.

But, if it's just games and not the DVD playback, then I would ignore this. (By the way, no DVD player on the Wii)

Why do people always use the VHS/Betamax thing as an analogy. It's not really pertinent in current technology and climate. For a start Betmax was Sony's brainchild and Sony have quite a reputation for messing up their formats in marketability. Betamax was the higher quality and more expensive which is more equivalent to Blu Ray. Neither of which matters because the market split is continually shifting. HD DVD is behind at the moment but last year it looked like Blu Ray was well behind. And on the whole the technological equivalence fails because of the hybrid machines coming out and the use of HD DVD and Blu Ray extends to more media than just video, i.e. games and computer storage. Something that was never an issue with VHS and Betmax. I'd say DVD+/-/RAM "format war" is the nearer equivalent and the end result is that we still live with all the formats with a shift in prevalence depending on application.
