Energy bill still wrong after a year

Do back-billing rules over a year apply to me?

I complained to my energy supplier in July that the bill was incorrect. I went to the Ombudsman, and they told the supplier to bill me correctly.

The energy company is still generating an incorrect bill. I have gone back to the Ombudsman, and they are asking the supplier to sort out the problem, but there has not been much progress yet.

The bill dates back to March 2025 to the present. Does the back-billing rule for charges over a year old now apply?

Thank you

    Welcome to the forum.

Do back-billing rules over a year apply to me?

You've not provided anything like enough information for us to answer this question.

Have you been making payments to your energy company throughout this period? If your bill was correct, would your account be in credit?

What exactly is wrong with your bill?

Are you being billed on estimated readings rather than actual meter readings?

Back billing only ever applies if the amount of money you are being billed for leaves your account in debit.

    Sorry for the limited details.

Moved into the flat in march last year. Set up the account. Started paying by direct debit. But they are generating bills from next doors meters. After the ombudsman case, as of February they are charging the correct electric meter but on the incorrect tariff.

And they are now charging me for a different persons gas meter. A different meter this time but still not mine.

So I now have a bill from march 2025 to now. Charging the correct electric meter but wrong tariff, and next doors gas meter on the wrong tariff.

To add. I was paying direct debit. I think instead of changing my meter over they just closed the account. And opened a new account with the bill dating back to when I moved in.

    Thanks for the extra info.

The back-billing rules are intended to reduce "bill shock" and prevent energy companies asking for new money in respect of energy used more than a year ago.

If you've been making regular payments onto account, it's likely that the vast majority of your bill (once they sort it out) will be covered by existing credit on your account and back billing won't apply.
