Refund Options for a faulty caravan

"… We had an independent service done on purchase just to check and they found that the axle was badly damaged and shouldn't have been sold to us… "
I also wondered (1) what would it cost to repair the axle, and (2) what "… shouldn't have been sold to us in the first place…" meant - ie did they mean that it was unroadworthy and a criminal offence to sell it at all, or just that the seller should have known of the probelm and either notified the OP or priced it accordingly?
