Travel Insurance amount to cover

I read a tip from Martin saying to try and get separate quotes even if traveling as a couple.

But how much do i have to cover.

e.g. if our trip costs £2500 each do i just cover each passenger for £2500, or do i have insure both for £5000 as thats the total cost of trip.

The sum insured on a travel policy is a per person amount, so a £5,000 limit would be £5,000 per person irrespective if 1, 2 or 10 people are covered by the policy. There can sometimes be special rules for infants.

  • But as we are traveling as a couple if one of us cant travel, we would need to cover both travellers if we booked separate insurances.

And surely we would need £5000 cancellation cover if we took out a policy for a couple?

  • I have just gone back to my comparison site, and thank you. As you say the cancellation amount is per person. i have been doubling on all my trips to date. Thanks, that has saved me money.

Lots of people make that mistake, thankfully travel insurance is so so cheap for the majority it doesnt make that much difference in premium (at least compared to the cost of the holiday).

Many make other mistakes too like thinking if you are treating a group of 6 people to a holiday that only you need the insurance and for the whole amount because no one else has paid anything but no, you would only be able to claim 1/6th from your policy and the others would need to claim off their policies (if they exist).

Insurance is a highly commoditised distress purchase for most and so price is king and hence its all self service, online etc to reduce operational costs but its actually a fairly complex product and many dont really understand what they are buying but unfortunately people dont want to pay the premium of having an advised sale with an expert guiding you through.

Which insurers provide an advised sale with an expert for travel insurance? This may be helpful in my circumstances.

My GP couldn't believe that I struggle to get travel insurance, when they have patients with more serious conditions who can get it.

It'll be a broker, no direct insurers do advised sales that I am aware of.

We had a very hard to place issue and had good service from Norton Insurance Brokers in Birmingham who were the only people able to find someone willing to provide cover. The quote was a lot better than I expected, given the risk, but there was a £40 fee from them in there… our normal travel insurance needs are under £40 in total let alone just the broker fee

I may go back to the list of insurers given by BIBA for people having difficulty getting insurance.

I didn't find too many on that list particularly helpful. I had one heck of a job getting travel insurance for a trip earlier this year.

Either literally thousands £ or a flat out NO, couldn't even 'exclude' it, which was VERY strange given that even people with cancer can get cover & it wasn't that!

Thankfully stumbled on SAGA, though had to settle for single trip cover, not the annual policy I'd wanted, but at least I had cover. Give them a try.

Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

Unfortunately, Saga declined to quote, along with Staysure and all the others that were recommended to me.

I didn't find the ones I called on that list particularly helpful either, which is not what you want when you've exhausted all other options.

I was originally looking for insurance for a transatlantic cruise. A specialist medical comparison site did return some quotes, ranging from £2500 to £12600, for a single trip, and that's not a typo.

The only insurers that would cover me, without declining to quote and for Europe only, were AllClear and Insure&Go, which as has been pointed out, are the same company. I know people who have no problem getting insurance for cancer, heart conditions, etc. My conditions aren't life threatening, but it could be a cumulation of several conditions that's the issue.
