Basically, the Cam Belt had go my dad's old 2006 car had gone according to a local garage he uses (he had bought it used a fair few years ago, from somewhere else). It was going to cost him around £1,200 to fixed. He thought it wasn't worth getting it fixed considering the age of the car. So he had me put it up for sale on Facebook Marketplace for him (he's not on Facebook). We offered it up for £500, and put in our ad that the cam belt had gone. I got a message fairly quickly, enquiring about it. I answered on behalf of my dad. They had their uncle look at it (who I assume knows about cars). They then offered the full asking price for it. So they came to pick up, and only had £440 cash, my dad just wanting it gone took it. Anyway, they plugged in their own diagnostic kit, and reckon that it's the cylinder that's broken, and will cost more to fix than it's worth. Anyway, they want the £40 back so they can get all their money back from scrapping it. My dad is standing fairly firm on this.

Am I right in thinking they don't have a leg to stand on?

Many thanks

No leg to stand on. And turning up with less cash than needed was totally intentional.

Yeah, I suspected as much. I personally think they're just trying to pull a fast one, and get the car for even less. They also told us that the flatbed tow they got, had a flat, and that's why they had £60 less.
