Ending self assessment ( high income child benefit )
Hi, all
To give some background, I've been PAYE all my working life.
Over the past 2-3 years I've had to do self-assessment due to the high income child benefit thing.
However, we have now ended our child benefit as of around three weeks ago, hopefully this means I can stop doing any form of self assessment?
Do I just stop, or 'deregister' or anything else?

You’re paying through Self Assessment and no longer need to send a tax return
Phone HMRC if both of the following apply:
- you want to start paying the tax charge through PAYE
- you no longer need to send a tax return for another reason

Phone them…
Jeez

What's wrong with that?
But basically yes, you just need to contact them (other methods apart from phone are available) to let them know you no longer need to complete a self-assessment. If you just fail to complete a self-assessment without telling them first, you'll just cause yourself a lot of unnecessary hassle.
Although, if you've received Child Benefit for part of the current tax year, you may still need to complete one final self-assessment at the end of this year.

The best time to phone is as soon as lines open at 8am to be at the front of the queue.
Sometimes you can get an answer just before 8 as sometimes staff start work early.

I just submitted form online and got confirmation about 3-4 weeks later

You could have another two returns to file yet, before the need to do them ends.
There is a new service you could use, which avoids the need for Self Assessment but you might actually find it simpler to compete tax returns rather than get involved in a whole new system for the final year or two.
As long as you confirm the Child Benefit has ended in the relevant box on your 2026/27 return then I don't see anything else is needed.

Yes, I'll be doing a 2025/2026 assessment and then that will be that.

Why two?
I have a self assessment to do covering me for April 2025 to April 2026, I stopped the child benefit in April.
I don't see why I'd have to do one for 2026/2027?

When in April? Anything after 6 April 2026 is 2026-27 tax year.

Because a couple of days ago you said this,
