Smart Meters
Hello allI recently emailed Octopus Energy as they said I didn't need to send meter readings as I have smart meters. I told them that I'd asked for the 'smart element' to be disabled & asked how I could achieve this. Below is the reply I received. Are they correct? Many thanks in anticipation of replies.
I understand that you prefer to read your meters and submit the readings yourself. Unfortunately, the smart functionality of your meters cannot be switched off. The meters are designed to send readings automatically as part of their smart capabilities, and there isn’t a way to stop this from happening.
Even if you submit your own readings, the meter will still pull and send its own readings regardless. The only situations where the meter might not send readings are if there are physical obstructions, such as thick walls, that prevent the meter from connecting to the network.

Take you readings & compare to theirs?
Why would you want smart turning off?

This is the official position from Ofgem:

Don't depend on AI summaries as they frequently get this wrong as it has changed a lot in recent years.

it’s is not possible to have it switched off, but having a smart meter means you have access to Octopus’s entire range of smart tariffs which, depending on how you heat your home could save you significant amounts of money. You will also be better off if you have an EV or solar panels.
There is no downside to having a functioning smart meter.

Why on earth would you want to turn off automatically sending your meter readings? Having a smart meter gives you access to many money saving plans (this is a money saving website!!). For example, I’m getting 16 hours free electricity every Sunday with EDF. That’s only possible with a smart meter.
