USER WEIGHT RECOMMENDATIONS
All our upholstered furniture is tested and approved for a user weight of up to 130 kg. We recommend the following for multi-seater sofas:
2-seater 2 x 100 kg, maximum 200 kg
3-seater 3 x 80 kg, maximum 240 kg
Which seems to be std across their range of sofa's

This revelation means that the salesperson clearly misold the sofa
No ifs no buts as the sofa is clearly not suitable for any single user who weighs more than 130KG and had therefore been missold
The OP should go back to the ombudsman and reopen the section 75 if possibel
The only thing that astounds me is that seemingly neither the OP nor the salesman actually checked with the manufacturer on a £4.5 K purchase to understand what their clear position is.

Many thanks all. Saves me doing something else stupid.
I seem to recall checking on Himmolas website at the time, but found all sorts other than a weight limit.

So you did check or tried to to find out from himmolas website about the sofa weight limits before you made the purchase?

It does not seem that much of a revelation to me, nor inconsistent with the emails from the store prior to purchase:
"Himolla 3 seaters would be able to support up to the weight of 240KG."

we don't know if this was put up as a result of this problem escalating

That paragraph was added to the website between may and June 2024 so not as a result of this.

It looks like you missed this part
All our upholstered furniture is tested and approved for a user weight of up to 130 kg
the 240 kg clearly refers to more than one person sitting on the sofa which is at the same time correct but is not the correct answer to the question "is this sofa fit for purpose for a person who weighs 220kg"
Basically so what if the sofa is good for 2 people who weigh 120kg

Whilst there is an argument that doing performing your own checks before spending £4500 on a sofa would have been a good idea (hindsight is a wonderful thing!) - I still think that the sofa was mis-sold by the salesperson.
OP specifically said "I'm afraid I'd need something twice as strong. Are there any other ranges you have please that would be or could be specified to be strenghtened to support one or two large individuals weighing in the environs of 220kg each?"
From this, it is clear what was needed.
The salesperson responded with: "we don't have a 3-seater range to allow for the required limit for both
individuals. Himolla 3 seaters would be able to support up to the weight of 240KG ….. This would be the best option that we have at this present moment in time."The correct response would have been "I'm sorry, but we don't have anything that would meet those requirements".
It looks, to me, as if the salesperson misread the sofa's weight limit information.

I'm not sure you're right.
Perhaps I've misunderstood but in the email to the OP from the salesman, the OP seems to be specifically advised that none of the trader's sofas will meet the OP's requirements:
"… I have looked into the ranges that we have on the shop floor in terms of weight limit
unfortunately we don't have a 3-seater range to allow for the required limit for both
individuals…"Yes the salesman then mentions the Himolla 3-seater as having a weight limit of 240kg and being the best option they had at that time, but I think it's pretty clear that he means total weight and not weight per person because (1) he doesn't say per individual and (2) he indicates that they have them on the shop floor, and he's already said that they don't have anything suitable on the shop floor.
I suspect the OP has either misunderstood what I think the salesman has clearly said, or has decided that as the Himolla is the best option they had, that they would risk it.
I don't think the salesman has misrepresented sofa or otherwise misled the OP.
