How to request SA tax return
Can someone advise how I can request to go on SA.
For y/e 2026 HMRC have overtaxed my pension (via emergency tax), I also need to inform them of a small capital gain (They don't know about this), and confirm interest received. (They overestimated/got this wrong).
Logging onto gateway doesn't help (directs me to form SA55 for current year pension tax overpayment, not last year), and I can't find where I could ammend interest or declare CGT
The App has option to request removal from SA, but not to join…
All the above would be neatly resolved by SA, so this would seem the obvious way forward, but I read I cannot just print off a form and send it in, and I can't find anywhere to formerly request one…
I know I can just "wait", and hope HMRC work it all out eventually, but I would prefer to get infront of it as they owe me and I have little confidence they will get it right…

File your Self Assessment tax return online - GOV.UK
Just fill it in.
Note: whether this is the right thing for you to do, I am not advising that, just answering your question on how to do it.

This is the interactive link that allows you to register for self assessment for the first time. Only by completing this process and HMRC issuing you with a 10 digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) will you then be able to submit a self assessment tax return -

Thanks, I'll follow the link. Not sure if it will work as I have a UTR number as I have filed SA in the past but not for a few years. Seems like this link will generate a new UTR number which could be problematic?

I very much doubt thst.
You only ever have two UTR's if you are made bankrupt.

Hello Ciprico - please see our guidance on registering for SA if you already have a UTR. Thanks https://www.litrg.org.uk/tax-nic/how-tax-collected/self-assessment-and-tax-returns/registering-self-assessment#3
