Buyer beware if purchasing an IKEA kitchen and appliances.

We purchased a full IKEA kitchen designed by IKEA’s own planner, along with integrated appliances. What followed has been months of problems including dimensional issues, missing and cancelled parts, defective components, appliance failures, and huge amounts of time spent chasing customer support.

The most frustrating part has been IKEA’s handling of it afterwards. Their standard response has largely been to blame “customer measurements” or installation, even where issues are unrelated to room measurements at all. Our microwave has now completely failed after 4 repair visits, yet IKEA continue insisting we deal with the manufacturer warranty rather than acknowledging their obligations under the Consumer Rights Act.

More than 6 months later we still do not have the fully completed kitchen we paid for and are now pursuing a Section 75 claim through Ikano Bank.

At this stage, the finance agreement may end up being the only reason we have any meaningful consumer protection leverage at all.

If you buy an IKEA kitchen:

  • keep every email and photo
  • document every defect immediately
  • understand the difference between warranty rights and statutory rights
  • be cautious about assuming IKEA customer service will resolve complex disputes fairly

Even if you do all of that, you may still find yourself in the same position as us.

The showroom experience was excellent. The aftercare experience when things go wrong has been the complete opposite.

It would be wise to do those things whoever you buy the kitchen from. There are plenty of horror stories about other kitchen suppliers as well as IKEA.
