What free Ad blocker do you recommend?
I installed Total Adblock as a Google Extension yesterday, however, it keeps giving me pop ups and pages which open advertising their paid version. I also suspect it causes YouTube videos to halt since they weren't doing that before, although I have another adblocker called Adblock for Youtube.

Well it does tell you on the extension page for that extension "Start with a 7-day free trial to experience premium features, including unlimited ad and tracker blocking on all websites. After the trial, continue using basic adblock features for free or upgrade to maintain premium protection on popular sites."
And YouTube can detect ad-block and will cause interruptions and delay on playback of videos, though if TotalAdblock and your other add-on are doing the same job you probably should pick one or the other, not both.
uBlock Origin (note the name and don't just Google uBlock) may be worth looking at but suggest don't run more than one ad-blocker extension. Note that Google have changed the way extensions work in Chrome and a lot of them don't work now.

On desktop, Adblock Plus in Firefox works to block YouTube ads. Occasionally videos are slow to start but embedded ads are usually removed seamlessly.
On mobile (Android) I'm using uBlock Origin, again with Firefox.

Have you ever thought about using a different browser. I have used Brave for a few years. All ads blocked by default, and it's a great browser…… just a suggestion …..

I use Adblock Plus on Chrome. Works fine and only opens itself in a tab when there's an update etc.

Me too, works well.

Chrome won't let any extension block ads properly by design.
Use a different browser and uBlock Origin. I use Firefox and uBlock Origin and never see ads anywhere including on Youtube.

Another vote for Firefox with uBlock Origin for an advert free browsing experience.

Not free as it comes with my Surfshark VPN but CleanWeb works brilliantly with Chrome.
