Stuck in a dystopian nightmare between energy suppliers

Start paying from the point you open the account, and make sure they pursue the other named person for the last 3 months bills. The gap should give them an incentive to get it sorted quickly, and if they don't - free electricity!

The OP owes SP the money, not the erroneous person on the account. SP have been supplying them energy from the date of the erroneous switch. Home Energy will need to pay the back the money taken by DD or the OP can get their bank to recall it under the DD guarantee.

I don't know if the OP has already seen the CAB advice on erroneous transfers:
Or the Ofgem page that explains what compensation is due:

This all happened just 6 months after you purchased the property.
Did you actually open an account with the incumbent supplier at the time of purchase and follow the correct procedure to Switch to Home Energy at that time?
Did Scottish Power supply the property for the previous owner?0 -
Yes, but… SP have made a big mess, and OP needs SP to sort it out. This is not OP's fault, it is SPs. The "payment gap" is leverage. Without leverage, it is very hard to make large faceless corporations do what they're suppose to do.

Yes, we ported out home energy account into the new address 2 days after moving in so we were with home energy from June to December.
Scottish Power did not supply the property previously and it was Octopus.
