LG battery recall - check yours

If you have an LG battery pack attached to your solar inverter, check it isn't one of the ones involved in a safety recall from 2021/22. If your installer went bust, then you may not have been notified.

Thanks @QrizB . Fortunately my installer is still solvent so I was informed about the safety recall, but it turned out that my battery was not one of the ones with the potential problem.

Hi All…I have a battery included in the recall and has clear signs of swelling, but the response from LG has been far from ideal, initially offering a buyout of €2000 and increasing to €2400….acknowledging that this would not cover the cost of a replacement. Then then followed up saying it would be 4 months plus and they have no UK respresentative.

All very frustrating since they state a replacement and I am still in warranty. The complicated part is that I have sole my property on the premiss of having a battery and need it resolved….repeated emails are not working.

Any advice would be appreciated.

In my case, the battery was part of a Solax system. When I contacted LG, they pushed me onto Solax, and Solax supplied me with a replacement battery. Is your warranty with LG, or someone else?

If you're selling your property, is it possible to grab the cash from LG, and renegotiate the sale price of the property with the buyer?

One thing to consider is that disposing of a large lithium battery isn't easy. In my case, Solax sent out a courier with the new battery, and then sent the courier back again to collect the old one. If the battery isn't correctly boxed up, with the mandatory labelling on the box, then the courier won't take it.

Is your battery a 48V low-voltage one or a 400V high-voltage one?

If it's 48V, you can probably buy a much larger replacement battery today for €2400.

A 400V battery is more of a problem, alas. You'd need to replace your inverter as well.

@Poundstretcher12 You should think about what battery you can buy with the buyout that LG have offered. If your battery is affected then it was made between March 2017 and March 2018. Batteries were much more expensive back then so you may be able to buy a brand new larger capacity battery that would be a better option than an identical replacement for your old LG battery.
