Working for council, using own car.

OP - do you, in addition to the mileage, receive a car allowance of any kind.
I am confused by the comments that you have to transport people in the car, especially as you mention working for children's services. I assume not taking minors in the car without another chaperone.
As an aside, does the council also pay an additional mileage for passengers? Some do.
There is an additional tax allowance available relating to passenger mileage payments.

I have an enhanced DBS as I work with minors, as well as transport them. No chaperone required. No additional car allowance provided fro the council, just the mileage rate.

You seem to be very brave.
I would not take children in my car for work without another adult chaperone, even if only to protect against vexatious comments.
You will need to wait, but the Council may increase the mileage allowance based upon the Chancellor's statement this week. Too early for the Council to have considered that at today.

If you had a drive you could considerably reduce your fuel costs if you were able to go EV: I currently reckon mine is about 2p per mile. Servicing costs low too.
When I needed to drive for my job I wasn't senior enough to have a company car - not very generous in public utilities back in the day - so I had to use a pool car. When one wasn't available I had to gracefully decline using mine as it wasn't insured for business, but a pool car or a more senior colleague's car was always available.

But the mileage rate is now 55p a mile

Only if the employer chooses to increase the rate at which they reimburse. Where that is not the case, the available tax relief does increase.

That sounds like a rough deal if the vehicle is a requirement for the job. Usually, council contracts are pretty strict about allowances covering everything, but it's worth checking with a union representative to see if there's any policy covering maintenance window allowances during work hours.

I too am in the same position. Unfortunately by pay for business miles does not show the millage so I can see this being a nightmare when I try to claim the extra tax relief. I find it laughable when the councils claim to have all this equality but only follow government guidelines when they have financial gain.
