Working for council, using own car.

Speak with trade union re this, I know unison are soliciting members views on mileage rates currently offered.
Can you work in office or access a pool car?
Are you contractually required to provide your own car or is it simply an expectation?

Has everyone taken leave of their senses? Simple solution, I will put it in bold maybe…
Get the car serviced at the weekend!!!!

Breakdowns, emergencies, punctures etc don't always comply with your weekend requirements !
Ive never tried to get a car serviced on a weekend but, I can imagine it's considerably more difficult to find an available time slot than on a weekday.

I used to use my car for work (although not to the same extent as you). As it’s your personal car then I think it’s up to you to get it repaired / serviced in your own time. Whether that’s a weekend, evening, before or after work, flexi time, etc. (maybe using a courtesy car). But I don’t think it reasonable to expect your employer to give you time off work to do it.

Why should he it's his vehicle not the councils.
Next you'll be saying it's a generous mileage allowance.

Yes, his vehicle that he still uses himself. Like I said, if he DIDNT use it for work, when would he get it serviced normally? Its creating a problem that quite frankly doesnt exist. I used to drive to the office and back every day, Monday to Friday. Guess what day of the week I arranged my service for?

I don't think anyone is suggesting the employer gives time off. Work from home for a day, use a pool car.
I had an issue with NHS whereby I withdrew cooperation be declining requests to use my own car, a pool car shortly became available.

45p per mile was the mileage rate that I got 30+ years ago. Given the rather sharp rise in fuel costs I suspect it need adjusting up, and backdating and urgently. Hopefully the unions will already be onto it as we can hardly rely on anyone else making changes voluntarily !

It's set by HMRC and is reviewed periodically.

How does that help those people currently paying a lot more for fuel & still being reimbursed only 45p per mile ? Let's hope HMRC get around to their 'periodic' review of mileage rates with some degree of urgency otherwise the war in the middle East will be over before they get a chance to do something to help. Why should drivers be penalised because HMRC have a tardy approach to mileage rates ? Not really good enough is it ?
