Non HD LCD's?

Does any company still make or sell non HD flat screen LCD televisions? I ask because I was looking for a TV and found a review page from the end of 2006 with an LCD for £230(was either 28" or 32"), searching the same model number now turned up the same tv in terms of size but it had built in freeview and was HD so now cost £600. I don't need HD whatsoever (and neither do plenty of people who buy HD Tv's) as i don't watch HD-DVD's or play consoles that take advantage of HD. I realsie it's probably unlikely because the the difference in production costs between the 2 is probably minimal but what you can charge for the HD TV is much higher.

thanks, I'll have a look on that forum. It's not so much the freeview but the HD. I feel like with High Def you're paying a premium for something that you might not necessarily ever use.
To be honest I'm just looking for something that is flat, at least 22"(got a stigma about this as my monitor is 22" so don't want anything smaller and as cheap as possible.

Sharp made a range, we have a LC32P70E, but there were others at the time, the P standing for PAL. They come up on ebay occaisionally and are probably the best non HD picture you will see on LCD.
  • doubt anyone will make them anymore as most of the population wouldn't look twice at a non hd screen and as you say the difference in production costs will be negligable between hd/sd. One thing I would say is try to see something on the screen before you buy it as I suspect a non hd screen will look even worse with sd content than an hd one (and some of them don't look great).

If you are only after sd - why not have a look at the old crt style of TV as they give a better picture quality and better sound quality (generally) and as nobody really wants them should be fairly cheap new or really cheap second hand.

On the contrary, the Sharp SD LCDs still beat most current HD LCDs for SD picture quality even though they are a few years old now. The improvement is due to lack of processing to scale the picture. I do agree that you should trust your eyes and ears though.
