RAC Breakdown Renewal Quote up 37%

After many years with the RAC for breakdown cover for 2 x cars (vehicle policies not personal ones), the time has come to go elsewhere for cover, as the premium looks to go up by £125 for the year to an eye-watering £440 (one car 8 months old, the other a 22 year old Ford Fiesta).

I have quotes of between £45 -£110 from a whole host of other companies, all offering the same cover (at home/onward travel/national recovery etc).

Having haggled with the RAC last year I am loathed to do it again, as their pricing increases are relentless, and loyalty, as with so much these days, counts for absolutely nothing.

Shop around folks!

Best wishes, Stuart.

Unless you get particularly good discounts, for example through an insurance policy purchase or dealership offer, these policies can become a bit of a cashcow for them.

Do you breakdown often or find the need to use them regularly? We've used them twice in 20 years, and both times just paid the one-off cost recovery. If we had held annual cover over that period we'd have paid about 1500% more over that time.

I imagine they do well out of the trend in modern cars not having spare wheels. That can be sorted by purchasing a 3rd party space saver for £200.

Appreciate some people prefer the peace of mind.

Over the years I have been with AA, RAC, Green Flag and Britannia Rescue. Often it comes down to how far away the nearest resource is, and whether they are available.

With my insurer full RAC cover on the vehicle is £61 so quite a difference to the stand alone price.

Even last year's premium of £315 seems steep. Congratulations on switching away; I end up moving from RAC to AA and back again every 2-3 years.

I've just left RAC for Auto Aid , RAC's renewal was around £200 + for me and wife and 2 cars , Auto Aid was only £80. If I'm a customer I want the best price first time round , not what they can get away with , and then having to haggle
