it really wouldnt be worth edf or anyone else sending a metering "expert" to probe / forensically identify use - most meter readers do no more than you can - press a button and read todays numbers - and EDF I suspect no longer have any rights to access your meter - remotely or otherwise. And for a non communicating meter, neither can recover data remotely.

You have a bill for 30 days for £120, not a particularly large one for all electric even for an autumn / winter month for many homes, the most of which your liable for - 10 days.

Id tell edf your willing to pay - i am guessing as above around the £40 mark , but they need to pursue tge landlord or previous tennant for the period before the 25th (*).

You seem unsure your landlord will deal with the forwarded demand - so id ge very wary ofvany informal split - like offering landlord the £40 say.

I am surprised given youve been in touch they havent actually registered you as their deemed customer - at least potentially from 25th (*) to 5th - and billed you for just that period (or to 3rd if that is when Octopus took over) so as you can pay your share of £120.

Id ring them, and discuss again.

I know you might not think it is fair, that its a share of an estimated bill, but reality is you didnt protect yourself by understanding the necessary process. I'd be tempted to chalk it up as a relatively minor cost life lesson.

You were given instruction to take readings - on day signed - so maybe 25th is your start date. And it could have been so much worse.

(*) Assuming that is when your tenancy agreement started - not signed, started (could you have moved in as far as landlord concerned on 25th when signed?)
