USA Summer Camp - Travel Insurance etc
Hello,
I'm looking for some advice.
My son is going to the USA in a few weeks to be a camp counsellor in one of the American summer camps.
He will be working at the camp for approx. 8 weeks. Once the he had finished at the camp he will be then travelling the US for a couple of weeks before heading home.
The camp provides medical Insurance whilst he is working but we are looking to get him properly covered insurance wise.
What sort of insurance would best suite his needs. For example would he need Travel insurance that covers him to work for the whole period he is away, or just for the period he is working with normal travel insurance to cover the time he is touring etc.
Also which are the best companies to use etc.
Many thanks

I would strongly advise contacting the organisation providing the placement.
Many years ago, in my long lost youth, I worked as a camp counsellor through Camp America - they covered all that sort of stuff during the period working at camp - the time after finishing and returning home is where I would seek guidance.
Take plenty of sun tan cream - it can get very hot out in the boondocks during summer.

my niece is going this summer. Her mum took out back packer insurance for the travel after and camp America gave info on insurance for working.

Unless things have changed, Camp America establishments will have medical cover in place for the duration of acounsellor's contract working in the camp.
I had to visit the local clinic to get inoculations following a hornet sting - was going to dismiss it as a minor war wound in the line of duty, however management insisted I was treated - probably in case there were any adverse complications.
The big thing they were worried about was rabies - apparently bats are (or were then) a potential source.

The OP did say the camp provided medical insurance while working.
What is queried is insurance cover for holiday time afterwards

Presumably your son is relatively young and doesnt have significant health issues? If so you are probably better off simply buying normal travel insurance for the whole trip than trying to get some specialist cover that covers the whole trip for certain aspects but only part of the trip for medical.
It's worth checking what the terms of the Camp insurance is, US health insurance can have significant copay (excess) and coinsurance (percentage you have to pay, sometimes capped). For example a colleague recently had a major operation and despite having fairly ok insurance he still have to pay 10% of the $130,000 bill. Travel insurance typically will have an excess of £100 or less
