I was dithering about the hassle of VT for the sake of a few months, this might just swing me towards keeping it for the duration.

Calculate which option is cheaper. Handing back in September and cost of excess miles on top or paying until March and still paying excess, but possibly lower if drive less. If you continue driving way more than contracted, you will have to pay excess anyway at the end.
