Renting a Property - escaping the reference check ???

Hi All

i have just been told by my landlord that i need to move out of my property in 6 weeks as he is selling.

i have had a look around and we want to rent a house , but the agencies want to rob us blind , 4 of us want to move into a new home (2 couples)

& the agency want to charge us per adult £70 to reference check our details , now we dotn have anything to hide , but £280 for them verifying our details ..NO WAY :eek:

can i use my own reference agency ?

also any other usefull tips wil be greatly apreciated

    If i were you I would look in your local newspapers/supermarket notice boards/shop window ads, as they often seem to have small ads in for houses to let. Alot of the private landlords dont do credit checks etc.

    I think these agency people are a total rip off!

  • I agree on the reference front...the idea of paying a contract and a reference fee is absurd. Sounds like you are dealing with Foxtons...

    Your options depend on whether you have time to find another place or not. I wound up paying a £250 contract fee because I had my back to the wall and no time to look for another place. The next time I moved, the agency had no fees, reference/contract etc so if you have the time you could look for another place. Having rented 3 places in the last 4 years, what seems to happen on the reference front is that they typically ask for a letter from your employer. If you are employed, I would find out if the landlord would be satisifed with this or if you are self employed, a letter from the bank?
