Appropriate insurance for 5aside football at sports hall
Hi all, been playing 5aside football at a local sports hall for around 5 years. The guy who organises it is stopping, and has asked if anyone can take over the booking - essentially collecting money and paying for the slots.
I offered, however when I was sent the forms to fill in my personal details for the booking it says this:
'By signing this application, I agree on my own behalf and of the organisation / club to comply with the ‘Conditions of Hire for Sports Facilities’. This signature is also confirmation that our organisation / club has in place the appropriate insurance with a minimum Third Party insurance with a liability of £5,000,000.'
I asked in the group, and we have NEVER had any insurance in place for playing 5 aside. I asked a few other contacts who hire a slot in the hall as well, and they don't have insurance either.
I'm nervous about signing this and lying. Also, could I, as the organiser going forward be liable for any injuries players sustain? For example, a boy twisted his ankle a few weeks ago and is now off work. Could I be sued as the organiser for damages? And is that why I need insurance?
Do I need insurance personally now as the organiser, or some sort of sports/club insurance?
This is all a bit above me head, and I don't want to put myself in a compromising situation.
Thanks in advance.

when I ran a dog training class in my local hall I needed Public Liability Insurance.

Thanks. I'm guessing you had paying customers??
We're just a bunch of guys who mutually agree to play a bit of football, I dont understand why we need insurance, especially third party?

I'll give you an example of why you might need third party liability cover. Many years ago (more than 40) I was watching a game of 5 a side between two teams of work colleagues from a balcony overlooking the pitch in a sports hall. In a moment of inattention I looked away and just at that time one of the players hit a wayward shot and the ball hit me square in the face. Luckily I escaped injury beyond a sore nose and bent glasses, but if, for example, a lens had broken and gouged my eye out I might well have been looking (sic) to make a claim.

Its more for them to be able to deny any liability if someone gets injured whilst playing in the hall by showing you were supposed to have insurance and so advise them to redirect their claim to you/your club and if the claimant refuses then they may call you as co-defendent.
Many people sign contracts saying they have insurance but dont, most get away with it, some have expensive consequences.
