A few years ago I fainted after getting out of bed at night. I was out for about 2 minutes, wife called 999 just in case. After a night in hospital I remember the consultant over my bed with a number of students explaining the case and that he'd have to inform DVLA as the rules are I should be suspended from driving for a while (can't remember how long)….anyway I gave a sob story that I'd lose my job and house, so he gave me the benefit of the doubt this time.

I had a few more incidents at night but not fully fainting. A number of years later they discovered a major aortic aneurysm that was likely the cause.

In some ways I kind of get why DVLA take the approach they do.
