Apple Switch Payment card for Apple Pay without asking
OK. My Apple Pay wallet has a debit card attached to it. It always has, the same card. My credit card is in my autofills but nowhere else. Especially not as an option in Apple Pay.
Today I discovered, by accident, that the last four Apple Pay transactions I have done were all put on my credit card! The one that only appears in my autofills.
I don’t know how that is even possible, let alone why it has happened. Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone have any ideas for what I can do about this? Needless to say of all of the online options in the help section, none offer me any help on this.

Have you checked that your debit card is still the default for Apple Pay?
Is this on a phone/watch? Have you updated iOS recently? I found that messed with some settings but not my wallet.

Yes, still the default. The only account on Apple Pay even. It’s on an iPhone. There was a recent update, but I would have heard if there was a widespread issue.

I've only ever used Apple Pay on my phone and I don't have autofill for anything.
I have credit card listed on the wallet but only as an emergency.
Might be worth asking on the Apple forum (although the official replies can be a bit corporate rather than helpful)

“Apple Pay doesn’t switch payment cards on its own. It either uses your default card or the one you manually select at checkout. Before any payment is completed, you always see a confirmation screen, so nothing is charged without your approval.”

The last 4 payments how & where were they made?
Online retailers where auto fill was used or bricks & mortar retailer?

Apple Pay is fairly complex how it works, the card number that is used for ApplePay has a different number to the physical card (or another virtual card). Some banks show the transactions with the new card number, some remap it back to the original card.
The card issuer has to be actively involved in onboarding a card to ApplePay as they have to generate the new card number for Apple to use and all, that I know of, do their own checks that you have agreed to this prior to allowing the card to be used in ApplePay.
So the idea that Apple has looked to see what cards you have stored in Safari and then not only taken it upon themselves to add them to AppleWallet and somehow convince your bank that you have authorised it simply doesnt hang together.
There are various ways cards can be added to AppleWallet/Pay… you can do it in the Wallet app or most banking apps have the ability to add it from there, certainly I've had banks prompt if I want to add it to the Wallet and of cause if you are doing it in their app they dont do the second layer checks as they already know you are you.
As a big AmEx user I do on occasions go to use ApplePay and find it shows its going to use a different card to the default if the merchant doesnt accept AmEx but its still limited to the range of cards setup in ApplePay. By default ApplePay is also by device so you can have different cards set up on different devices, there is an option to "import" from other devices now too but it's not automatic.

From memory, you’ll get a confirmation test after adding a card to Apple Pay from your bank. You also need either the card or card details to add it
I’ve never had a default card change by itself.

Got this fixed today, but still no idea how it happened. Or why just in the past four weeks. 🤷♂️
