Eclipse August 2026

We've been looking at the eclipse as it's been gradually progressing, and it's quite exciting to see a greater and greater gouge being taken out of the sun. And we're still around 20 minutes away from the maximum effect here in London.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?2 -
Currently in the pub, "We saw the whole of the moon" is going on the jukebox.

Watched the BBC News channel on iPlayer while going to the top of the garden - in the absence of special specs, and a poor pinhole effort, in the end I used a white envelope against the sun through tree leaves. Very effective, although not as obvious / eerie / cooler etc as in 1999.

@GDB2222…here is food for thought for you for planning where to go for next years Total Solar Eclipse!!! The NASA web site is great for getting the detail of the track and showing how much "total coverage" time you get in each location. Gibraltar has 4.30 minutes which is nice a long and a relatively straight forward place to get to! But wow, Luxor and the Valley of the Kings would be an unbelievable place to go for the longest eclipse in our lifetime at over 6 minutes long!!! 😀 That location has a very extremely high chance of no cloud but the downside being it will be an expensive destination to get to!!!

With two in relatively close succession (timing and geography) everywhere is going to be expensive. An associate works for the Royal Observatory and he mentioned he'd looked at prices for Spain and Gib and both have spiked heavily

Realistically for me (in terms of money and time) my outline plan at the moment would be to get a flight to Malaga or Seville and pick up a hire car and drive south. I appreciate what @MyRealNameToo says about prices in the 100% totality zone being inflated - as it usually happens a day either side of the eclipse, so worth spending a bit of time investigating and making any bookings with reputable & authentic providers. When I went to Türkiye a few years back, I booked a complete package holiday with Tui (which turned out the cheapest way for me to get to the area). Quite hilarious though being with a load of people who were just "on holiday" and didn't realise about the eclipse at all! Hahaha!
